The National Police have arrested a businessman, while two other people are under investigation, following the tragic accident that occurred on July 23 in Écija, Sevilla. A worker at a prefabricated company lost his life when he was trapped under a heavy concrete slab weighing more than four tons.
According to information provided by the Police, the investigations were carried out by the Local Investigation Group, devoting significant efforts to clarify the facts surrounding this fatal accident. It is important to note that this is not an isolated incident, as, in 2007, another employee also lost his life in similar circumstances.
Investigations have revealed that the accident occurred during the loading of concrete slabs , carried out by an operator using a crane. This procedure involved moving the slabs for their subsequent loading onto a truck. However, carelessness in the placement and fixing of these slabs proved catastrophic. One of the slabs was not secured correctly, which caused it to fall on the driver of the transport truck.
The investigation revealed that there were numerous negligences in the placement of the signs. Police officers determined that the worker's death could have been prevented if minimum safety measures, which are mandatory in this type of dangerous work, had been followed.
Corporate negligence
The investigation has found evidence of negligent conduct on the part of the company , which was aware of the risks inherent in these tasks. Despite this, the necessary precautions were not taken to prevent access to the manoeuvring area, which could have allowed the incident to be completely avoided.
The businessman who was arrested has been brought before the Court of Instruction of Écija, which has decided to release him on charges. This decision comes in a context where the other two people involved are facing investigations for serious negligent homicide , as well as crimes linked to workers' rights. This case resonates with the need for greater accountability and a stricter regulatory framework that protects employees in their work environment.
