Alarming increase in sexist violence in 2023 in Spain

Increase in gender violence in Spain
In 2023, the Ministry of the Interior has documented a total of 123,452 serious incidents of gender-based violence . This figure represents 9.8% more than the previous year and an alarming 48% more than five years ago, according to data provided by the Ministry's Statistical Crime Portal.
The department, led by Fernando Grande-Marlaska, It considers as serious crimes those that include homicides, injuries, crimes against liberty, as well as attacks on moral integrity and sexual freedom. Other crimes committed with violence or intimidation towards partners or ex-partners also fall into this category.
In addition, more complex situations are covered, such as the induction of abortions, injuries to the fetus and acts of vicarious violence affecting minor children.
Statistics indicate that the autonomous communities with the most female victims of gender-based violence in the last year are:
Andalucía: 25,806 cases; Comunitat Valenciana: 17,812; Madrid: 17.382; Cataluña: 9.240; and Canarias: 8.297.
Other communities with significant numbers include Baleares (5.998), Murcia (5.687), Galicia (5,499), Castilla-La Mancha (5.382), and País Vasco (4,879), among other regions. There were also 228 victimizations recorded abroad .
Since 2015, the number of serious incidents has shown a notable increase, with the only exception being 2020 , when there was a drop due to the consequences of confinement during the pandemic. The annual figures are alarming: 123,452 in 2023, 112,446 in 2022, 98,230 in 2021, and so on. This trend has set off alarm bells throughout society, making a thorough analysis necessary.
The 016 hotline is a vital resource for victims of gender-based violence, offering 24/7 assistance in 53 languages. This service does not leave a trace on the telephone bill, although it is recommended to delete the record of the call made.
Assistance is also available by email at 016-online@igualdad.gob.es and by WhatsApp at 600 000 016. For minors, there is the ANAR Foundation with the contact number 900 20 20 10 .
In emergency situations, it is crucial to know that you can call 112 or contact the National Police (091) and Civil Guard (062). If you cannot make a call, the application ALERTCOPS allows alerts to be sent to the Police with geolocation, offering a means of help in critical moments.
