Housing crisis in the Balearic Islands, hundreds of families resort to caravans

In the Balearic archipelago, the lack of affordable housing has led many families, including children and the elderly, to adopt unconventional housing. Jesús, a caravan resident, asks a troubling question: “ Who can afford to pay 1,200 euros to rent a flat when their salary doesn’t even reach 1,000? ” The answer seems to be that more and more families are giving up on the search for a conventional home.
Caravans have become a refuge for those who cannot cope with the exorbitant prices of the property market. In areas such as Son Hugo, Workers who perform essential jobs such as bus driving are forced to live in these conditions. Rampant speculation, the voracity of investment funds and illegal tourism have created hostile terrain for those seeking a decent home.
Renting a room in Palma can reach astronomical figures. According to recent studies, up to 91 people compete for an available room. Renting a studio has become up to 90% more expensive than sharing an apartment. This situation has triggered the demand for unconventional spaces, such as caravans.
Life in the caravans is not without its challenges. The lack of basic services such as clean water and electricity is a constant concern for residents. Mircea, another resident with his daughter, highlights the urgency of having basic services: “ Is it normal that we are like animals? ” he asks. His story reflects the reality of many: the struggle to access the most basic things in an environment that seems to have forgotten them.
The stories of those who live in caravans are diverse. Víctor, A Peruvian naval mechanic is suffering the consequences of an economy that does not allow easy access to housing. “ They ask for almost six months to be able to rent ,” he says, disillusioned. David, Another resident expresses his frustration in a similar way: “ If you earn 1,200 euros, you pay 600 for a room and 300 or 400 for food, what do you have left to live on?
The situation has led many to demonstrate in search of solutions. One of the central points of their protest is the inability of the City Council to Palma to provide alternative housing. Despite promises of social assistance, many residents feel their concerns are being ignored. In an attempt to make their voice heard, the caravan community has asked to be allowed to live in peace and without fear of eviction.
Through it all, residents continue to adapt to their surroundings and find ways to make ends meet. Caravan life, while challenging, has provided a space where they can find some community and solidarity. However, with the future so uncertain, many are forced to question their place in society: “ Do I live to work or do I work to live? ” they ask. David.
