Concern in Tarragona over the dengue outbreak, 8 people affected

Recently, an outbreak of indigenous dengue has been detected in the province of Tarragona, this being the largest recorded in Spain in recent times. This outbreak affects five employees of Port Aventura, as well as two French tourists and an eighth person whose identity remains unknown.
Investigations carried out by the health authorities of the Generalitat indicate that the infections, which occur through the bites of the tiger mosquito , occurred during the second half of August in a specific area of the urban area of Vila-seca, a municipality adjacent to the theme park.
All workers ofPort AventuraThey share an apartment inVila-seca, located near the hotel where the French tourists were staying, indicating that most of the infections occurred in this area, not in the park itself.
It is estimated that more cases could be reported in the coming days, although the Generalitat has indicated that there have been no new diagnoses with symptoms in the last 10 days, which corresponds to the maximum incubation period of the virus.
Since the outbreak was reported, both Port Aventuraas authorities have taken preventative measures to control the mosquito population in the area, ensuring that all established health protocols are followed.
So far, eight cases of dengue have been reported, two of which required hospitalization. Four of those affected had mild symptoms and two other cases were asymptomatic. It has been confirmed that they have a common factor: they were all exposed in the same area.
Dengue, a tropical disease, is transmitted mainly by the Aedes albopictus, also known as the tiger mosquito. The possibility of transmission between people has been documented on rare occasions, but this is uncommon.
The incidence of dengue has seen a marked increase in recent years, with a record of more than 6.5 million cases and more than 7,300 deaths reported in 2023. This disease, which had been considered eradicated in Europe for almost a century, has returned with a vengeance due to the presence of the tiger mosquito.
