It's not my culture

Bullfighting has been a controversial topic in Spain for years, and since 2013 it has been protected by the Law for the Regulation of Bullfighting as Cultural Heritage. This law originated from a popular legislative initiative (ILP) which, after an arduous process in Congress, received the necessary support for its publication in the BOEOn that occasion, defenders of bullfighting collected 650,000 signatures to ensure its protection.
Currently, the platform No es mi Cultura seeks to reverse this law through a new ILPSo far, they have collected 300,000 signatures and aim to reach 650,000 by January 19. The deadline for submitting all signatures was extended due to delays in the administration, giving them an extra three months to gather the necessary support.
Among the firms gathered, there are well-known names such as Yolanda Díaz, Irene Montero and other prominent members of different parties.
Support also extends to the cultural sphere, with figures such as the journalist Rosa Montero and numerous actors and musicians who have shown their support for this cause.
However, there is a major challenge to face. The main opposition comes from the Partido Socialista (PSOE), which is essential for the Law to advance in the legislative process. Activists are aware of the different sensitivities that exist within the PSOE with regard to bullfighting, which makes the path to the admission of the Law not easy.
Aïda Gascón, activist and spokesperson for the Platform No es Mi Cultura, has emphasized that the proposal does not seek to immediately ban bullfighting, but rather to give the autonomous communities the power to decide on this issue.
Currently, there has been a noticeable decline in attendance at bullfighting events. According to the latest statistics, only 1.9% of the population attended bullfights during the 2021-2022 season, which contrasts markedly with the 9.8% reported in 2006. This change in trends could reflect a cultural shift in the perception of bullfighting and an increase in animalist awareness .
Members of the platform No es mi Cultura They remain optimistic, as they are convinced that they will reach their goal of 650,000 signatures. In doing so, they will not only surpass previous figures, but also seek to create a significant change in legislation related to animal protection and bullfighting culture in Spain.
