Alcohol control

The Minister of the Interior , Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has expressed his intention to initiate parliamentary procedures to significantly reduce the blood alcohol level . During a recent Forum Europa Information Breakfast, he stressed that Spanish society is ready to accept this necessary change towards reducing accidents on our roads.
The proposal, supported by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), seeks to transform the general rate of 0.5 grams per litre to 0.2 g/l . This measure would be implemented through article 20 of the general traffic regulations, which would require the collaboration of the different parliamentary forces for its approval. This adjustment would not only align Spain with successful models of other European countries such asSuecia, but would also contribute to reducing road deaths.
In previous months, this measure had already been considered, although only for novice and professional drivers. However, the current proposal extends its scope to all drivers, which implies a significant change in traffic policy. According to the minister's reports, last summer 241 deaths were recorded in accidents caused by road violence , where the type of substances involved, such as alcohol and drugs, have been shown to be determining factors in more than half of the accidents.
Grande-Marlaska has stressed the importance of addressing the debate on reducing the alcohol rate and the implementation of voluntary courses for the recovery of driving license points, proposing a comprehensive approach to road safety in the country.
Since it was introducedcarné por puntos, a gradual decrease in the number of road deaths has been observed. Currently, the mortality rate in Spain stands at 36 deaths per million inhabitants , which is significantly lower than the average forla Unión Europea, set at 47 deaths per million.
Minister Grande-Marlaska has stated that the real challenge now is to match the road safety index of model countries such asSuecia,DinamarcaandAlemaniaThese nations have implemented effective policies that have shown positive results in reducing accidents.
