The Repeal of the Historical Memory Law in Cantabria
PP and Vox They have achieved approval of the bill to repeal the Law of Historical and Democratic Memory of this autonomous community.
The Historical Memory Law was approved in the previous legislature by the PRC and PSOE, which led to clashes with right-wing pro-Franco parties. At the event, PP deputy Iñigo Fernández argued that the original law lacked consensus and established a distinction between first- and second-class victims. His position is based on the belief that the repeal of this law would promote better coexistence in Cantabria.
Vox, supporting the repeal, has said that it is not acceptable to maintain in force rules that, in its opinion, spread resentment and division. The spokesperson for Vox, Leticia Díaz, He stressed that the current law is an attempt to rewrite history in a sectarian way. In his opinion, it is necessary to respect the memory of all victims, without distinction.
Faced with this situation, the parties PRC and PSOE They have expressed their commitment to work on the creation of a new law on democratic memory once they regain the parliamentary majority. Antonio Hernando, spokesperson for the PRC, regretted the repeal of a law that he considered crucial for historical justice. Hernando He called for dialogue between political parties and asked that the repeal process be suspended.
The Right to Memory
Mario Iglesias, of the PSOE, defended the importance of the Law of Historical Memory as a step forward in terms of human rights and justice. He stressed that historical memory is not about resentment, but about dignifying the victims of oppression. Iglesias He urged right-wing parties to renounce the possibility of whitewashing dictatorships by ignoring Spain's recent history.
Processing of the Bill
Although the decision to repeal the Law on Historical Memory was approved as an urgent matter, the legislative process must follow the usual course in the corresponding parliamentary committee. This means that, although the first step has been taken, multiple factors must still be considered, including the appearances and amendments presented by the parliamentary groups.
